Additionally, new challenges and possibilities are arising with increasing renewable shares, but cost-effectiveness, reliability, robustness and security of the system must always be maintained. This requires new solutions.
The IET RPG conference will address topics related to these specific areas: renewable technology development, renewable integration to the power system and associated solutions.
Advancement of the field requires researchers and professionals to address new questions, propose novel ideas and evaluate new solutions. Consequently, it is crucial that we come together as a community to share our ideas, experiences, and lessons learned.
Our hosts for RPG 2021 are based in Ireland an island power system, which aims to achieve a 70% renewables share by 2030. Today, onshore wind power dominates in Ireland, but, in the near future, offshore wind and solar power are anticipated, and, looking further ahead, wave and tidal power remain possible.
The 2030 target is tremendously ambitious, but progress is underway, given that it implies that, at certain times, the synchronously isolated system could be operating with a 100+% share of variable, non-synchronous renewables. Due to the existing high share of wind energy on the system, Ireland already faces operational and stability changes, and consequently a wide range of ground-breaking measures have been pioneered, ranging from smart grid initiatives, network planning strategies, system operator tools, performance monitoring mechanisms, and system service innovations.

University College Dublin (UCD) is the largest university in Ireland, one of Europe's leading research-intensive universities, and ranked within the top 1% of institutions world-wide. The UCD Energy Institute was launched in 2013 with the support of the Irish Energy industry and philanthropic donations, and it performs multidisciplinary research on energy systems integration for enhanced energy performance, reduced costs and minimising environmental impact. The institute has developed strong relationships with all the major energy players in Ireland, and actively participates in a wide range of international and European research and demonstration projects.
EirGrid Group develops, manages and operates the electricity transmission grid, through EirGrid in Ireland and SONI in Northern Ireland. It is responsible for the safe, secure and reliable supply of electricity. EirGrid Group also includes SEMO, the Single Electricity Market Operator, which operates the wholesale electricity market across the island of Ireland. The East West Interconnector, a high-voltage link between the electricity grids in Ireland and Great Britain, is also owned and operated by EirGrid Group.
EirGrid’s programme for “Delivering a Secure Sustainable Electricity System” seeks to address the challenge of integrating world-leading levels of renewable generation onto the all-island power system, with pioneering targets to 2030 and beyond. This exciting and challenging programme is built on three pillars; System Performance, Policies and Tools.
Across these three pillars, EirGrid, in collaboration with local and international stakeholders are fundamentally reviewing how we do things across the electricity industry to ensure policies, incentives, standards and tools are fit for purpose in a system with world-leading levels of renewables.
